Berachain Launches Mainnet with $632 Million BERA Token Airdrop

On February 6, 2024, Berachain, a proof-of-liquidity layer-1 blockchain, launched its mainnet alongside an estimated $632 million airdrop of its native BERA token.

The airdrop, announced on February 5, 2024, will distribute nearly 80 million BERA tokens to eligible users. This represents 15.8% of the total 500 million BERA tokens issued at Genesis.

While the BERA token has not yet launched, it is currently trading at approximately $8 per token on Aevo. This puts the total initial airdrop at roughly $632 million, although the amount is subject to change.

The largest share of the airdrop will go to holders of Bong Bears NFTs and affiliated NFT projects. Initial claims begin on February 6, 2024, with claims for social engagement and Request for Broposal users starting on February 10, 2024.

Outside of the airdrop, 13.1% of the BERA supply is allocated for community initiatives, 20% for ecosystem research and development, 34.3% for institutional investors, and 16.8% for advisers and developers.

Berachain aims to turn liquidity into security through its proof-of-liquidity consensus mechanism. The BERA token will serve as the network's gas token for transaction fees and as a staking token to enhance network security.
