Malaysia Tops Data Center Hub Ranking in Southeast Asia for 2024

Kuala Lumpur, December 24, 2024 – Malaysia has secured the leading position in property consultancy Knight Frank's SEA-5 Data Centre Opportunity Index for the second consecutive year.

The country achieved an annual take-up of 429 megawatts (MW), surpassing regional competitors due to its strong infrastructure and strategic investments.

In the first ten months of 2024, Malaysia attracted RM141.72 billion (US$31.58 billion) in digital investments, significantly exceeding the total for 2023. This includes $23.3 billion in investments from major tech companies like Nvidia, Microsoft, and Google.

Currently, Malaysia operates 54 data centers with a total live IT capacity of 504.8 MW. Indonesia follows in second place with an annual take-up of 93 MW, while Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam recorded 31 MW, 1 MW, and 3 MW, respectively.

The SEA-5 data center market has now surpassed 3 gigawatts in total capacity, a substantial increase from 1.7 gigawatts in 2022. Notable expansions include Amazon Web Services and Oracle Cloud entering the Malaysian market, and Microsoft planning a new data center in Thailand.
