India Surges as Top Source of US Tourists in 2024

India's Growing Influence in US Tourism

In a remarkable shift, India has emerged as the fastest-growing source of incoming tourist arrivals to the United States, with a record 2.19 million Indian visitors in 2024. This places India second only to the UK in total international arrivals, marking a significant milestone for both nations.

According to Fred Dixon, president and CEO of Brand USA, this surge represents a 24.3% increase from the previous year and an impressive 49% growth compared to pre-pandemic levels. He emphasized that India is now a top priority for US tourism, with many states recognizing Indian travelers as a vital source market.

The growth in direct non-stop air capacity from India to the US has also been notable, surpassing all other countries since 2019. Dixon noted, "When you look across categories, India is leading in so many ways in terms of the various metrics." The optimism surrounding India's travel trends suggests that this upward trajectory will continue.

In 2023, India climbed to the fifth position among source markets for the US, overtaking Germany. With over 4 million visitors from the UK and 1.99 million from Germany, the competition among international markets is intensifying. Dixon's insights reflect a growing recognition of India’s potential, as states in the US now see Indian travelers ranking within their top ten source markets.

Liz Bittner, president and CEO of Travel South USA, highlighted the financial impact of Indian travelers, aiming for $500 million in foreign exchange spending this year, up from $340 million last year. In Boston alone, Indian visitors contributed $163 million, showcasing their significant role in the tourism economy.

As the travel landscape continues to evolve, India’s position as a key player in US tourism is set to expand, offering exciting opportunities for both travelers and the tourism industry alike.
