The SPA Refuge in Laval, Mayenne, rolled out the red carpet for a special dog adoption event. With a fashion show featuring adorable pups, the initiative aimed to find loving homes for dogs in need. This time of year sees a rise in pet abandonments, especially after the holiday season when pets are often given as gifts.
Among the stars of the show was Connie, a seven-year-old Akita Inu. The event provided a calm setting for potential adopters to meet the dogs. Amandine Duval, president of the SPA de Laval, noted that the dogs were excited to meet visitors, which helped create a bond.
“When adopting a dog, it’s important to think it through,” said one attendee. “I’m not ready to leave a dog alone all day, but maybe in retirement.”
Fifteen dogs enjoyed their moment in the spotlight, but the shelter is home to many more. Currently, 280 animals are waiting for families, and the situation is not expected to improve soon.
Staff members like Jennyfer Dugas emphasized the importance of matching dogs with suitable families. They ask potential adopters about their lifestyles, living situations, and whether they have other pets to ensure a good fit.
Adopting a pet is a significant commitment. Since 2022, obtaining a certificate of knowledge and commitment has been mandatory for adopting any animal, including dogs, cats, ferrets, or rabbits.
