Galp Expands Electric Vehicle Charging Network Using Public Lighting Infrastructure in Portugal

On November 21, 2024, Galp announced plans to expand its electric vehicle charging network in Portugal by utilizing public lighting posts. This initiative aims to make charging more convenient and accessible in urban environments, leveraging existing infrastructure.

The company stated that this project will help reduce the time and cost associated with establishing new slow charging points, while also mitigating the need for additional power supply to the grid and minimizing the occupation of public walkway space.

According to Galp's executive director, João Diogo Marques, this initiative addresses a pressing need in major urban centers. In both the metropolitan areas of Porto and Lisbon, over half of residential units lack dedicated parking or garages. Therefore, public charging solutions like this are essential.

Galp currently operates two charging points using this technology in the Junqueiro neighborhood of Carcavelos and at the former Matosinhos Refinery. The company plans to continue expanding this network, although it has not specified the number of new charging points to be installed. Galp claims to have the largest electric mobility network in Portugal, with over 5,500 points installed nationwide, and recently surpassed one million charge sessions on this network last month, exceeding previous records.
