On November 2, 2024, the World Education Meeting concluded in Fortaleza, Brazil, with significant commitments from the Peruvian government to advance Sustainable Development Goal 4 of the UN's 2030 Agenda. Education Minister Morgan Quero underscored the importance of creating an inclusive and high-quality educational system.
The gathering, organized by UNESCO, saw participation from 190 education ministers and officials. During the two-day event, the 'Global Education Monitoring Report 2024/5' was presented, and the Fortaleza Declaration was adopted, emphasizing education as a fundamental human right and the necessity of financial support from both public and private sectors.
Quero highlighted Peru's educational advancements and signed a memorandum of understanding with Finland to foster cooperation and improve educational services in Peru. He stated that education remains a priority for President Dina Boluarte's government, with the sector's budget set to reach 5.1% of GDP next year.
To address educational infrastructure gaps, the Ministry of Education is promoting a significant investment initiative of S/7000 million and will establish an office to manage investment projects in collaboration with the private sector.
The minister also emphasized the integration of science, technology, and digital transformation in Peru's education system, respecting cultural diversity and engaging continuously with indigenous communities.
During the summit's final day, Minister Quero met with various international counterparts, including China's Deputy Minister of Education, Jie Chen, and U.S. Under Secretary of Education, Cindy Marten, to discuss enhancing technical and university education cooperation. Meetings with officials from Italy, Ecuador, and Benin focused on scholarship opportunities and pedagogical exchanges.
After the summit, Quero participated in a regional meeting to review strategies for the recovery and transformation of education.
