US to Increase Military Aid to Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict with Russia

On September 26, 2024, the United States announced a new military aid package for Ukraine, which will include light armored vehicles, patrol boats, handheld weapons such as Javelin anti-tank missiles, spare parts, and additional equipment. A portion of the funds will also be allocated for transporting the equipment and training.

President Biden and Ukrainian President Zelensky are expected to discuss in Washington whether Ukraine can use American weapons to target Russian positions in the rear. Until now, the U.S. has only allowed Ukraine to strike targets in Russia that are related to repelling the Russian offensive in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine. Analysts suggest this cautious approach stems from fears of escalating conflict between the two nuclear powers.

The United States has been the largest military supporter of Ukraine. According to a statement from the U.S. Department of State in early September, the U.S. has provided Ukraine with military assistance worth $55.7 billion since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.

The ongoing support underscores the U.S. commitment to Ukraine's defense and the broader geopolitical implications of the conflict.
