AWS Unveils New Database Features at re:Invent 2024

At the re:Invent 2024 conference, AWS CEO Matt Garman announced new database features, including Amazon Aurora DSQL and Amazon DynamoDB Global Tables, which promise 99.999% multi-region availability, high consistency, low latency, and no infrastructure management.

These advancements allow users' applications to access the latest data without code changes. Garman emphasized that an ideal database service should offer high availability, multi-region support, low latency, and SQL compatibility.

To tackle challenges in data synchronization across regions, AWS developed a new method to reduce data traffic, enhancing consistency. Additionally, AWS introduced the Amazon Time Sync service, which synchronizes EC2 instances globally to microsecond precision using atomic clocks.

Aurora DSQL is touted as the fastest serverless distributed SQL database, enabling users to create highly consistent, PostgreSQL-compatible applications without infrastructure management. Garman claimed that Aurora DSQL's read and write speeds are four times faster than Google Spanner, making it suitable for global distributed applications.

Meanwhile, DynamoDB Global Tables, AWS's first fully managed serverless NoSQL database, offers global multi-region high availability and low latency, ensuring that customers' applications can always access the latest data without code modifications.
