Romania Stuns Sweden in Euro 2024 Handball

The Romanian women's national handball team achieved a remarkable victory against Sweden, winning 25-23 in their second match of the main group I at the European Championship held in Debrecen. This unexpected win marks Romania's first two points in the group standings.

Bianca Bazaliu was the standout player, scoring eight goals, while other contributors included Ostase with six goals and Bors, Grozav, and Popa, each adding to the scoreline. The match saw Romania lead with a significant margin of 10-4 in the first half, showcasing their dominance early on.

Despite losing key player Alisia Boiciuc to a red card in the second half, Romania maintained their composure against a determined Swedish side, who managed to close the gap to just one goal at times. However, strong defensive performances, particularly from goalkeeper Ioana Raluca Kelemen, helped secure the win.

This victory is particularly significant for Romania, who aims to improve upon their previous European Championship performances, where they finished 12th in the last two editions. The tournament, featuring 24 teams for the first time, is being co-hosted by Hungary, Switzerland, and Austria, with the final stages scheduled to take place in Vienna.
