Pogacar Makes History with World Title Triumph in Zurich

The 2024 UCI Road World Championships in Zurich witnessed a historic achievement as Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar claimed his first world title. Pogacar executed a remarkable solo attack with 100 kilometers remaining, a move that has rarely been attempted in competitive cycling, leading him to victory in the men’s road race.

Pogacar's performance solidified his status as one of the sport's all-time greats. With this victory, he became only the third cyclist in history to win the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France, and the World Championship in the same year, following the legendary Eddy Merckx and Stephen Roche.

His extraordinary season culminated in this triumph, marking his 23rd win in just 55 race days. After breaking away from his competitors, Pogacar maintained a lead of 34 seconds over Australian Ben O'Connor and 58 seconds ahead of Dutch rider Mathieu van der Poel, who was defending his title.

Pogacar's strategy paid off as he distanced himself from his last remaining rival, Pavel Sivakov, and surged ahead alone with 51 kilometers to go. This audacious move, initially deemed reckless, ultimately showcased his exceptional endurance and tactical acumen.

As he dons the coveted rainbow jersey, Pogacar not only brings pride to Slovenia but also sets his sights on future challenges, including the prestigious Italian classics.
