Ancient Epetija Unearthed in Croatia

In a significant archaeological discovery, Croatia's Minister of Culture and Media, Nina Obuljen Koržinek, visited the ancient site of Epetija in Stobreč on September 26, 2024. The site, previously identified as having great potential, is now being thoroughly excavated to reveal its historical significance.

Research leader Marina Ugarković emphasized that the Epetija site is one of the most important archaeological locations in Croatia, with excavations ongoing for five months. Notable findings include a monumental Greek wall measuring 70 meters long and 3.5 meters wide, making it the best-preserved Hellenistic structure in the country.

The site has revealed remnants from various periods, including the Iron Age, Hellenistic, Roman, and Late Antiquity. Excavations have uncovered numerous artifacts from daily life, such as kitchen pottery, amphorae, and metal objects, providing valuable insights into the lives of ancient inhabitants.

As the excavation progresses, the findings will contribute to a greater understanding of the region's historical narrative, showcasing the continuity of settlement from prehistory through to the early Middle Ages.
