Intense Rainfall Warning in Paraná, Brazil - November 6, 2024

Paraná is under a new alert for intense rainfall, effective from 10 AM on Wednesday, November 6, until 10 AM on Thursday, November 7. The warning was issued by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) and indicates potential danger across the entire state.

In the northwest, north, and Campos Gerais regions, the severity of the alert is heightened, with winds expected to reach 100 km/h in 170 municipalities. Rainfall may accumulate to 60 millimeters per hour or 100 mm per day in these areas. For other regions, winds may reach up to 60 km/h, with total rainfall of up to 30 millimeters per hour or 50 mm per day.

According to Inmet, areas under the most intense alert are at risk for power outages, falling trees, flooding, and lightning strikes. Meteorologist Paulo Ricardo Bardou Barbieri from the Environmental Technology and Monitoring System of Paraná (Simepar) noted that early Wednesday saw considerable cloud cover across the state, with isolated light rain recorded between the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba and the coastal areas.

The weather is influenced by a low-pressure system over Paraguay and Mato Grosso do Sul, which is facilitating the influx of warm, moist air into Paraná. The afternoon is expected to bring increased likelihood of isolated thunderstorms statewide. High temperatures are anticipated, particularly in the northwest and western regions.

On Thursday, a frontal system will move into southern Brazil, enhancing instability in Paraná. Rainfall is expected to be more evenly distributed, with an increased risk of severe storms.
