Intense Rainfall Expected in Mexico

On October 1, 2024, Mexico's weather will welcome the country's first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum, with a cool morning but heavy and scattered rains expected in the evening. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) reports that tropical wave number 25 will move across southeastern Mexico, interacting with a monsoonal trough.

A low-pressure center in the Yucatán Peninsula and two additional low-pressure areas off the coasts of Guerrero and Oaxaca are likely to develop into cyclonic systems. This will lead to intense rainfall across eastern, southern, and southeastern states, as well as the Yucatán Peninsula, with torrential downpours predicted in Veracruz.

The rains may be accompanied by thunderstorms, strong winds, and possible hail in the affected regions, with very heavy rainfall expected in the State of Mexico and Morelos. Additionally, a new cold front will approach Mexico's northern border, causing strong winds and dust storms in the northwest and north, while its associated cold air mass will lower temperatures across the Northern and Central Plateaus.

Despite this, a warm afternoon is anticipated, with temperatures potentially exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in Baja California, Sonora, and Sinaloa. The National Water Commission (Conagua) has warned that torrential to intense rains are expected in 27 states across Mexico, which could lead to rising river and stream levels, landslides, flooding, and water accumulation in low-lying areas.

Residents in these regions are advised to take precautions before leaving their homes and to follow the guidance of local authorities.
