As urbanization and agricultural expansion threaten grasslands globally, a recent study from Kobe University highlights the effectiveness of prescribed burning in conserving endangered plant species. The study, led by master's student ASADA Airi and ecologist USHIMARU Atushi, focuses on the role of prescribed burns in preventing the encroachment of forests onto grasslands. With rural populations declining, many grasslands are left unmanaged, leading to habitat loss for numerous plant and insect species, many of which are endangered.

Prescribed burning is presented as a labor-efficient alternative to traditional land management practices, which have become increasingly challenging due to declining rural populations. The research team set up plots across various soil types on Mount Fuji, particularly in areas where the Japan Self-Defense Forces conduct annual burns, to observe the impact on plant diversity.

Findings published in the journal 'Plants, People, Planet' demonstrate that grasslands on young lava flows support a higher number of species, including endangered plants, compared to those on other substrates. Soil properties such as acidity and depth were found to influence the persistence of rare species.

The research underscores how prescribed burning can reset growth dynamics, allowing vulnerable plant species to thrive by reducing competition from faster-growing varieties. This approach not only aids in the conservation of grassland ecosystems in Japan but also offers insights applicable to similar ecological challenges worldwide.
