New Study Reveals 1,700 Plant Species on Mount Athos, Highlighting Global Biodiversity

A groundbreaking study conducted by four scientists has identified approximately 1,700 species and subspecies of plants on Mount Athos, Greece, including over 100 endemic to Northern Greece and more than 10 species found exclusively on the Holy Mountain.

The comprehensive research, initiated in 2022, aims to document the flora and vegetation of Mount Athos, with fieldwork expected to continue until 2024. The scientists have compiled a detailed book that not only catalogues these species but also includes descriptions and photographs for around 90% of the recorded plants.

According to Panagiotis Dimopoulos, one of the researchers, the project highlights the unique management practices of the region, characterized by minimal grazing. This updated documentation builds upon earlier records dating back to the 18th century, significantly expanding the known plant diversity of the area.

With around 6,500 plant species recorded in Greece, the discovery of 1,700 species on Mount Athos underscores the ecological significance of this region. The forthcoming publication, titled 'Flora of the Athos Peninsula. Plant life of the holy mountain', is set to be released in early 2025, first in English and subsequently in Greek, with plans to distribute over 1,000 copies to the Athos community.
