Didier Ludot's Couture Auction Breaks Records in Paris

On January 30, Didier Ludot marked a significant milestone by auctioning off his final haute couture treasures in Paris. After 50 years of running a vintage fashion boutique at Palais-Royal, the 73-year-old is retiring to southern France. His last auction at Bonhams Cornette de Saint Cyr featured 384 pieces, some of which he had treasured for decades.

The auction attracted over 2,000 visitors during a five-day public exhibition, culminating in a ten-hour bidding event that raised a remarkable €695,000, more than double the low estimate of €300,000. Buyers included private collectors, fashion brands seeking to restore their heritage, and museums from Japan, Chile, and Australia.

Among the standout items, a 1958 Balenciaga red satin and velvet cocktail ensemble soared to €40,960, far exceeding its €3,000-5,000 estimate. Another highlight was a 1959 Yves Saint Laurent lace dress for Christian Dior, which sold for €32,000 against an estimate of €5,000-7,000.

However, not all items met expectations. A 1969 Pierre Cardin vinyl coat, preserved in excellent condition, sold for only €1,400, below its €2,000-3,000 estimate. Some attendees expressed skepticism over a damaged Yves Saint Laurent ensemble, questioning its €1,300 price tag.

Ludot had promised accessible pieces, and indeed, a pale pink Balenciaga suit from 1968 fetched just €192. Yet, a Chanel jacket reached €1,200, highlighting the enduring appeal of iconic names.

The auction catalog showcased Ludot's passion for vintage couture, reflecting an era when clients moved gracefully in evening gowns. His keen eye for provenance and history enriched the sale, with notable pieces linked to fashion icons and royal patrons.
