A recent marriage auction in South Sudan has ignited controversy after Chol Marol Deng secured his union with Athiak Dau Riak for a staggering sum of 123 cattle, land, and approximately €39,600. This event, which took place in June, has drawn attention not only for its high stakes but also for the implications surrounding the bride's age.
The competition for Athiak’s hand involved another suitor, Marial Garang Jil, escalating the bidding and making headlines as the 'most expensive bride in South Sudan'. The wedding gained traction on social media, particularly TikTok, where images and videos of the event went viral.
However, the celebration has taken a legal turn. Lawyer Josephine Adhet Deng has initiated legal proceedings against Athiak's family, accusing them of facilitating the marriage of a minor. She is pushing for Athiak’s return from Kenya, where she was taken post-ceremony. Athiak has remained silent on the issue but expressed a desire to focus on her education rather than enter into marriage.
This incident raises significant questions about cultural practices, the rights of young women, and the intersection of tradition and modernity in South Sudan. The public's fascination with the auction reflects broader societal issues, highlighting the need for dialogue around marriage customs and the protection of minors.
