Kalimantan Timur's Maratua Run: A Unique Blend of Sport and Tourism in 2025

In January 2025, the beautiful island of Maratua in Berau will play host to a remarkable event celebrating both the 68th anniversary of East Kalimantan and the rich potential of the region. The Maratua Run, an international running event scheduled for February, promises to be a two-in-one spectacle that promotes health through running while showcasing the breathtaking underwater beauty of East Kalimantan.

As the acting governor of East Kalimantan, Akmal Malik, emphasized, "This province is extraordinary. While events in Jakarta are commonplace, hosting an event on a remote island is something truly special." The Maratua Run aims to not only attract runners but also increase direct flight frequencies to Maratua Airport, enhancing accessibility for visitors.

Efforts are underway to secure additional flights from various airlines, and for those arriving via Kalimarau Airport, speedboats will be available at Sanggam and Tanjung Batu ports to facilitate further travel. If successful, the Maratua Run could set a precedent for similar events in remote areas, with hopes to extend this initiative to other regions like Mahakam Ulu and Paser.

The event is in its final preparation stages, with the organizing committee, led by Sri Wahyuni, collaborating with local government and an internationally certified Event Organizer. They anticipate around 500 participants for the 5K and 10K runs.

Beyond the race, the Maratua Run will feature local product bazaars, cultural performances, and tourism promotions, engaging the local community including youth groups and local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This initiative not only highlights the beauty of East Kalimantan but also fosters community involvement and economic growth through tourism.
