Jordan and Qatar Strengthen Ties with Syria

On December 23, 2024, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi arrived in Damascus simultaneously with a high-level Qatari delegation led by Minister of State Mohammed Khalifi. This visit marks a significant step in the diplomatic engagement between Jordan, Qatar, and Syria.

During the visit, Safadi emphasized the importance of cooperation in combating drug and arms trafficking from Syria to Jordan, a concern that has diminished following the departure of former regime officials and drug manufacturers.

The Qatari delegation aims to establish a strategic relationship between Qatar and Syria, positioning Qatar as a liaison between Syria and the European Union and the United States. Key discussions included the restoration of operations at Damascus International Airport and enhancing bilateral relations.

Significant topics on the agenda included the electricity supply line to Syria and Lebanon, which has stalled due to the U.S. Caesar Act, agricultural exports, and water rights concerning the Yarmouk River. The issue of Jordanian missing persons in Syria and the status of Syrian refugees in Jordan were also addressed.

Furthermore, the longstanding ties between Jordanian and Syrian tribes were highlighted, underscoring the mutual trust in the Jordanian monarchy. The visit underscores Jordan's proactive diplomatic strategy in engaging with Syria.

Looking ahead, a visit from Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Damascus is scheduled for the following week.
