A recent study reveals that countries are increasingly collaborating on artificial intelligence (AI) research despite geopolitical tensions, particularly between the United States and China. Over the past decade, American and Chinese AI experts have frequently partnered on research projects, indicating a strong academic collaboration.

The report, published by Rest of World and based on data from Georgetown University’s Emerging Technology Observatory, emphasizes that collaboration remains robust, especially in areas such as computer vision.

Furthermore, the study highlights a surge in transnational collaborations among non-Western countries. Nations including India, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Malaysia, Brazil, and Taiwan have intensified their international partnerships in AI over the last ten years.

These collaborations are crucial for ensuring that diverse perspectives and social contexts are considered in AI technology development, leading to more inclusive and effective solutions.

Significant investments, such as Microsoft’s $1.4 billion commitment to G42 in the United Arab Emirates, face challenges due to the ongoing technological rivalry between the U.S. and China, illustrating how geopolitical tensions can impact global AI partnerships.

Brazilian researchers primarily collaborate with experts from the U.S., U.K., and China, followed by partnerships with Portuguese and French researchers. Notably, Brazil ranks tenth among countries with the most collaborations in the AI sector.
