EU Condemns Massacre in Haiti, Calls for Urgent Multinational Support to Combat Gang Violence

The European Union (EU) condemned what it termed a "horrific massacre" in Pont Sondé, Haiti, which occurred on the night of October 5, resulting in 70 fatalities, including women, children, and the elderly. The attack was carried out by the Grand Grif gang, shocking the nation and prompting urgent calls for international intervention.

Peter Stano, spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS), emphasized the necessity of deploying the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM) to assist the Haitian National Police in combating gang violence and restoring the rule of law. He stated, "This latest atrocity underscores the urgent need for full deployment of the MSSM to help the Haitian National Police fight gang violence and restore law and order."

The massacre involved the burning of at least 45 homes and 34 vehicles, displacing many residents. The EU affirmed its commitment to using all available tools, including targeted sanctions against those responsible for the violence. Stano added that the EU would continue to work with regional partners to help Haiti address its severe humanitarian crisis and move towards sustainable security and stabilization.

In light of the ongoing violence, the EU reiterated the importance of developing long-term solutions that integrate humanitarian, development, and peace efforts to support the Haitian people.
