Brazil's Lula Optimistic on EU-Mercosur Trade Deal Ahead of G20

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced his readiness to sign a trade agreement between the European Union and South America's Mercosur bloc, contingent on the EU concluding negotiations. Speaking at the U.N. General Assembly, Lula highlighted Brazil's stronger-than-expected economic growth and recent tax reforms that enhance stability for investors.

“If the EU is ready we can sign the trade agreement during the G20 meeting in Brazil,” he stated, referring to the upcoming summit in Rio de Janeiro in November. Lula expressed unprecedented optimism regarding the EU-Mercosur accord.

A European diplomatic source confirmed progress in negotiations, noting a meeting in Brasilia on Sept 5-6 aimed at bridging remaining gaps, particularly concerning environmental safeguards and government procurement. Mercosur includes Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia, and is a key target for EU manufacturers, despite concerns from European farmers about increased competition.
