MTN Partners with Satellite Providers for Internet Access in Africa

MTN, Africa's largest mobile operator, is forging partnerships with low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite providers to enhance internet connectivity in rural and remote regions. Group CEO Ralph Mupita emphasized the necessity of integrating satellite technology to ensure continuous connectivity for customers and businesses.

With the rise of satellite internet services like Starlink, MTN is conducting trials with various LEO satellite operators to explore potential collaborations. Mupita indicated that the company may resell satellite services to enterprise clients in select markets, reflecting a broader trend as other operators, such as Vodacom, also seek similar partnerships.

Mupita acknowledged the competitive landscape posed by LEO satellites, stating, "We're arranging ourselves to sure proof our businesses in key markets." He also called for equitable regulatory treatment for LEO operators, akin to traditional telecom providers, highlighting the need for a level playing field as the South African regulatory body develops rules for satellite internet services.
