Airtel Launches AI Spam Detection for 387 Million Subscribers in India

NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel has announced the rollout of its AI-enabled spam detection and blocking solution for its 387 million mobile subscribers in India. The service, described as seamless, requires no app downloads or additional charges, according to CEO Gopal Vittal.

Airtel's solution utilizes AI and network intelligence to analyze call patterns and identify spammers. Once identified, these numbers are tagged, alerting subscribers with a 'Suspected Spam' notification for calls and SMSes containing malicious links.

Vittal emphasized that the initiative aims to enhance user security and confidence against spam communications, which have been on the rise. The solution, developed by 400 Airtel data scientists, employs a proprietary algorithm to classify calls and messages in real-time.

This system also includes a centralized database of blacklisted URLs to warn users about potentially harmful links. Additionally, it can detect unusual patterns, such as frequent IMEI changes, indicative of fraudulent activity.
