Rare Planetary Alignment in January 2025

On January 21, 2025, a rare planetary alignment will be visible in the night sky, featuring six planets, four of which can be seen without a telescope. This event is part of a series of celestial phenomena occurring throughout the month.

Currently, Mars is rising in the east after sunset, having reached opposition on January 12, when Earth was positioned directly between Mars and the Sun. This proximity makes Mars appear larger and brighter than usual, easily visible below Jupiter.

On January 13, the first full moon of the year, known as the 'Wolf Moon,' occulted Mars for approximately one hour, creating a unique viewing experience for observers in North America.

The planetary parade will continue into February, with significant events such as a conjunction of Venus and Saturn on January 31, where they will appear just one degree apart in the sky. The following night, a crescent moon will be visible near Venus.

This celestial activity coincides with the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year, which begins on January 29, marking the 'Year of the Snake.' The lunar calendar is based on the moon's phases and the Earth's orbit around the Sun.
