Massive Wildfire Expands in Great Barrington, MA - November 20, 2024

GREAT BARRINGTON, MA -- A wildfire known as the Butternut Fire has expanded to an estimated 1,100 acres, reaching into neighboring Sheffield. The fire's growth has been attributed to unexpected weather conditions, according to Lee Fire Chief Ryan Brown.

As of 11 a.m. on Wednesday, the nearest structures are a quarter-mile from the flames, with firefighting crews deployed to protect the area. No evacuation orders have been issued, and residents will be informed of any changes through the town's Code RED system.

Firefighters are working diligently to prevent the fire from threatening structures later in the day. While smoke is expected to linger low due to weather conditions, authorities have indicated that there is no immediate health risk to residents.

The Butternut Fire began late on Monday night and is believed to be human-caused. Eighty crew members are currently engaged in firefighting efforts, with additional personnel at the incident command center. Difficult terrain and drought conditions have complicated efforts to establish a fire line and control the blaze.

The Great Barrington Fire Department has advised residents against entering wooded areas near the fire and has requested donations of packaged food and beverages for the firefighting crews.
