The world has taken another step toward complete seafloor mapping with the release of version 5.0 of the International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean (IBCAO). This major breakthrough was announced as part of the Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 project, which aims to fully map the ocean floor by 2030.

What’s New in Version 5.0?

🔹 1.4 million km² of new data added—an area three times the size of Sweden.
🔹 Increased map resolution: 100 × 100 m grid cells (compared to 200 × 200 m in the previous version).
🔹 Enhanced data compilation methods, including cloud computing and metadata integration.
🔹 Open access to data for scientists, navigators, and policymakers, supporting safer navigation, scientific research, and sustainable ocean management.

Why Does This Matter?

The Arctic remains one of the least explored regions on Earth. Its perennial ice cover and extreme conditions have long limited data collection, but modern technology and international collaboration are overcoming these challenges.

According to Martin Jakobsson, Co-Head of the Arctic and North Pacific Regional Center for Seabed 2030:

“This release showcases the power of teamwork and our determination to overcome the harsh conditions of the Arctic. These new data not only expand our understanding of the seafloor but also pave the way for future discoveries.”

Jamie McMichael-Phillips, Director of the Seabed 2030 project, adds:

“This milestone highlights the importance of regional initiatives like IBCAO in helping us achieve our global goal—complete seafloor mapping by 2030.”

Accessibility and Global Impact

All collected data will be included in the GEBCO global grid, which remains free and open to everyone. This ensures that scientists, environmentalists, shipping companies, and policymakers gain tools for better understanding and managing the world’s oceans.

What does this mean for the world?
✔ Improved navigation safety.
✔ More accurate climate change models.
✔ New discoveries in oceanography.
✔ Support for sustainable marine resource development.

The Oceans Are Becoming Less Mysterious!

The Seabed 2030 project is not just about mapping the seafloor—it’s a revolution in ocean exploration. The release of IBCAO 5.0 proves that science is advancing, revealing the secrets of the deep and helping humanity interact more consciously with nature.
