The Junta de Andalucía, Spain's regional government, has announced a series of urgent actions to protect the flora and natural spaces of Rota, a coastal town in the province of Cadiz. The initiative, part of a broader plan for the region, involves a total investment of €1.7 million, with €1.2 million allocated to forestry treatments and preventative measures in public forests. In Rota, the actions include pruning trees in the Dunes pine forest to improve their health and reduce fire risk, affecting approximately 1,500 trees over 7 hectares. Additionally, 697 square meters of invasive exotic vegetation will be removed to preserve native flora and promote ecological balance. Nine large trees in the Atlantic Park, posing a risk of falling or having dry branches, will be felled for safety reasons. Further forestry work will be carried out in the Rota Dunes, involving the felling of 570 trees to reduce forest density and improve ecosystem regeneration. Exotic species will be removed, and plant debris will be chipped and incorporated back into the soil. The Junta emphasizes the importance of institutional collaboration between the regional government and the Rota City Council in sustainable management of public forests, aiming to balance environmental protection with public enjoyment.
