Brazil's Environmental Institute Achieves Major Milestones in 2024 Amidst Severe Drought

The year 2024 has been a pivotal one for Brazil's Instituto Brasília Ambiental, as it navigated challenges while achieving significant milestones in environmental preservation. Roney Nemer, the institute's president, highlighted the dedication of its staff in safeguarding the Cerrado and promoting advancements in various environmental areas.

A key achievement was the approval of the Environmental Policy Execution Bonus (Gepa), which recognized the hard work of the institute's employees. Additionally, the administration successfully hired external collaborators to support administrative services and park management, alongside a historic mobilization for early hiring of forest firefighters, enhancing wildfire response effectiveness.

Among the notable actions was the 'Sine Ignis' operation, which identified illegal ignition systems in the Brasília National Park and tackled initial fire outbreaks in the Saburo Onoyama Ecological Park. Furthermore, the Superintendency of Conservation Units inaugurated the Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital, treating 1,753 animals thus far.

Despite facing a severe drought, the institute worked diligently to mitigate its impact, leading the Air Quality Commission and acquiring two additional air quality monitoring stations. Collaboration with federal conservation units was crucial in combating extensive wildfires that ravaged large areas of the Federal District.

This year demonstrated that development can coexist with environmental preservation, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future for upcoming generations.
