A groundbreaking project in Sri Lanka aims to restore 45 hectares of abandoned shrimp farms into thriving mangrove ecosystems, showcasing a global model for ecological recovery. Launched in collaboration with the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) and the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS), this initiative revitalizes the Anawilundawa RAMSAR wetland, a crucial habitat for diverse flora and fauna.
The area, once dominated by shrimp farming, has faced severe ecological degradation. Thilina Kumarasiri, Senior Research Officer at WNPS, emphasized the historical significance of the site, stating, 'Before shrimp farms, this area had a pristine mangrove ecosystem.' The restoration project employs innovative hydrological designs to facilitate natural tidal flows essential for mangrove growth.
As part of the restoration, a unique canal system was constructed to manage water flow, allowing natural seeds to propagate. Researchers have noted a remarkable emergence of mangrove sprouts, indicating a successful recovery of the ecosystem. Additionally, wildlife habitats have been enhanced by creating mounds from excavated soil, promoting biodiversity.
Ongoing research includes monitoring bird populations, with 166 species recorded, including migratory birds crucial to the region's ecological balance. The project also aims to empower local communities through entrepreneurship programs, highlighting the economic benefits of conserving mangroves.
Prof. Sevvandi Jayakody from Wayamba University remarked on the importance of Anawilundawa as a migratory stopover for birds, reinforcing the global significance of this restoration effort. With support from various local and international partners, the project exemplifies a collaborative approach to environmental conservation, offering valuable insights for similar initiatives worldwide.
