GLENVIEW, Ill. (WGN) -- With over 63 million households in the U.S. owning dogs, the New Year is a bustling time for groomers. Kelly Blatt, owner of Fur Babies, has seen a surge in appointments as dog owners want their furry friends to look their best.
"So, we have 17 haircuts ... 27 dogs that are getting bath and tidies," Blatt shared as she checked her busy schedule. The shop hasn't had a free slot since November. On a typical day, Blatt and her team pamper around 44 dogs.
Despite the hectic pace, Blatt loves every moment. Her team will groom over 500 dogs in just a few weeks. "We're sometimes [here] as late as eight o'clock at night trying to get things done. It's crazy and it's fun," she added.
The shop can feel chaotic, but Blatt knows each dog by name. "Hi Enzo! Everybody is scared of you but you're a big buluga," she says affectionately. She connects with each furry client, even those who come in looking a bit rough.
"A project dog," Blatt smiles, referring to a client that needs extra care. She believes every dog deserves a fresh start. As the New Year begins, Blatt is ready to give each pup a makeover, complete with a scarf for the holidays. "Aren't you so gorgeous? Let's go!"
