The European Union Ambassador to Canada, accompanied by 18 EU Heads of Mission, have started a two-day official visit to Winnipeg, Manitoba. This visit, which began recently, signals the start of the Team Europe initiative. The initiative aims to enhance cooperation with Canadian provinces and territories throughout 2025.
The mission highlights the EU's dedication to strengthening its relationship with Canada beyond the federal level. The EU plans to directly engage with local governments, businesses, and communities nationwide. The delegation, which includes ambassadors and high commissioners from numerous EU countries, will participate in key meetings with Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew.
Discussions will focus on trade and investment, clean energy, and innovation. A primary goal is to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual strategic interest, including critical raw materials and research opportunities under Horizon Europe. Reinforcing the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) will also be a major focus.
European leaders aim to showcase how CETA enhances transatlantic trade and fortifies global supply chains. They also want to foster collaboration in sectors like biotechnology and digital innovation. The EU Heads of Mission will also hold discussions with the Business Council of Manitoba and the Indigenous Chamber of Commerce to explore new channels for economic cooperation.
The delegation will tour the Canadian NORAD Headquarters and CentrePort Canada, highlighting Manitoba's role as a vital trade and logistics hub. They will also connect with members of the European community residing in Manitoba, reinforcing cultural and social bonds. This visit demonstrates a renewed emphasis on building resilient international partnerships through grassroots diplomacy.
EU Ambassador Geneviève Tuts stated that forging closer ties with reliable partners is imperative. She added that the EU remains committed to working with Canada to address the increasingly challenging global landscape. The visit underscores the EU's intention to remain a reliable and engaged partner to Canada at all levels of governance, addressing global challenges through strengthened cooperation.
