New Biomass Power Plant and CO2 Capture Facility Opening January 29, 2025

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

A new cogeneration power plant named 'Roblum' is set to commence operations on January 29, 2025, in the industrial area of El Crispín, La Robla, León. This facility will generate 50 megawatts (MW) of electrical power using agricultural biomass and will be accompanied by a carbon dioxide (CO2) capture plant.

The project, developed by Desarrollos Renovables Abies, S.L., occupies a total area of 116,312 square meters. The cogeneration plant will produce not only electrical power but also 41.4 MW of thermal steam through the combustion of agricultural biomass. The CO2 capture facility will utilize combustion gases to produce e-methanol in a separate industrial installation, which is part of a different project.

The steam generated will primarily be used for electricity production, with a portion allocated for external industrial processes and a district heating system for La Robla. The electrical output will be transmitted via a 132 kV underground line extending approximately 2,160 meters, connecting the facility to a newly constructed substation, known as 'Biomasa Roblum'. This substation will link to another substation owned by Naturgy, 'La Dehesa', and further connect to Red Eléctrica de España's 'La Robla 400 kV' substation.

This project is significant as it represents a step towards sustainable energy production and carbon management, addressing both energy needs and environmental concerns.
