In October 2025, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) and the Lao People's Democratic Republic will commence a significant infrastructure project. This initiative, supported by AED73.5 million (US$20 million), focuses on upgrading Southern National Road 13, aiming to enhance Laos' transportation network and boost economic growth.
The project involves the construction and upgrade of approximately 50 kilometers of road. This includes expanding 20 kilometers to four lanes with pedestrian sidewalks and upgrading 30 kilometers of existing roadway. It also incorporates traffic safety enhancements, improved drainage, and the installation of truck weigh stations.
The initiative is expected to benefit over 48,000 households annually, impacting more than 255,000 individuals. Key outcomes include improved access to markets, reduced travel times, and lower transportation costs. The project is scheduled for completion by 2028, fostering stronger ties between the UAE and Laos.
