The European Union (EU) is set to enhance its semiconductor sector with the launch of a €24 million design platform on January 20, 2025. This initiative, part of the EU's 'Chips for Europe' program, aims to position Europe as a global leader in semiconductor technology.
The project, led by Tampere University and 11 other European research institutions, focuses on developing a state-of-the-art, cloud-based design platform tailored for semiconductor chip designers. It intends to make chip design more accessible for start-ups and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by integrating a variety of tools and services.
Historically, the costs and complexities associated with chip design have hindered many SMEs from entering the market. This new platform seeks to overcome those barriers, providing affordable access to advanced design tools, thereby fostering innovation in chip development.
Furthermore, the platform will align with the EU's pilot production lines established under the Chips for Europe initiative, facilitating a smooth transition from design to manufacturing. A primary objective is to empower start-ups and SMEs to compete in the global semiconductor market, an area where smaller companies often struggle due to limited resources.
Timo Hämäläinen, Professor of Computer Engineering at Tampere University, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, "The Design Platform is a pivotal new initiative for both the University and companies in the semiconductor sector. This platform will substantially lower the threshold for IT and electronics companies to start their own chip design activities."
This launch is part of the EU's broader strategy outlined in the European Chips Act of 2023, which aims to double Europe's share of global semiconductor production by 2030. The initiative seeks to reduce dependence on external suppliers while fostering homegrown innovation and creating high-tech jobs.
