Trump's 79th Birthday Marked by Military Parade, Protests, and Violence

Edited by: S Света

Across the United States, hundreds of thousands of Donald Trump's opponents took to the streets under the slogan "No Kings." They protested what they see as the president's dictatorial tendencies and the "militarization of our democracy."

In Salt Lake City, Utah, shots were fired during a demonstration of about 10,000 people, resulting in one serious injury. Police arrested a suspect.

In Los Angeles, police used tear gas to disperse thousands of protesters. They were demonstrating against Trump's immigration policies. The National Guard, protecting some buildings, was booed by the crowd.

In Washington, D.C., Trump, celebrating his 79th birthday, attended a military parade. The parade included nearly 7,000 soldiers, about 150 military vehicles, and dozens of aircraft. The White House estimated 250,000 spectators. However, journalists noted a measured enthusiasm among the crowd.

A 17-year-old from New York, wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat, stated his support for Trump and the military. He supported Trump's immigration policies. His father, a history professor, said he liked a good military parade, despite not supporting Trump.

Trump gave a brief speech, honoring the soldiers. He called them "heroes and legends." The parade's budget was $45 million. The last major military parade in the U.S. was in 1991, after the Gulf War.

The day began with tragic events. Minnesota Democrat Melissa Hortman, 55, and her husband were killed at home. The governor called it a "deliberate act of political violence." Another Democratic official and his wife were seriously injured in a shooting. A 57-year-old white male suspect is being sought.

Vikas Mehta, a 45-year-old doctor, said it was essential to show that democracy is still strong. He was among the tens of thousands who marched in New York City. Some protesters gathered near Trump's Florida residence. Rallies also occurred in Paris and Mexico City.
