Denmark, US Strengthen Defense Ties, Sparking Sovereignty Debate

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Denmark and the United States have solidified their defense cooperation through a new agreement. This agreement allows the U.S. to station troops and pre-position weapons and military equipment in Denmark.

The agreement, however, has sparked debate, with critics raising concerns about Danish sovereignty. American soldiers stationed in Denmark will primarily be subject to U.S. law, potentially limiting their prosecution under Danish law.

The agreement builds on a history of defense cooperation, including a 1951 agreement allowing the U.S. to establish a military base in Greenland. The Thule Air Base, now known as Pituffik Space Base, has been a point of contention, especially after visits by U.S. officials and former President Donald Trump's claims on Greenland.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has stated that Denmark can terminate the defense cooperation agreement if the U.S. attempts to annex Greenland. This underscores the delicate balance between defense cooperation and national sovereignty.
