On December 26, 2024, an extraordinary meeting of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) foreign ministers took place in Kuwait, focusing on the stability and security of Syria and Lebanon. Attendees included Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif al-Zayani, Emirati Minister of State Khalifa al-Marar, Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed al-Khalifi, and GCC Secretary-General Jasem al-Budaiwi.
The meeting addressed current developments in Syria and Lebanon, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive transitional process in Syria that aligns with the aspirations of the Syrian people for stability and development. The ministers expressed their commitment to preserving Syrian state institutions and called for the disarmament of militias.
Furthermore, the GCC reiterated its support for the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' proposal to establish a UN mission to assist in the transitional process in Syria. The council condemned ongoing Israeli attacks on Syria, urging the international community to intervene and ensure Israel's withdrawal from occupied Syrian territories, including the Golan Heights.
In relation to Lebanon, the council reaffirmed its support for Lebanon's sovereignty and security, condemning Israeli violations and calling for adherence to the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah. The meeting concluded with a call for immediate humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people and a resolution to the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
