U.S. Treasury Secretary to Visit Japan Amidst Rising Trade Tensions

Edited by: Anna 🌎 Krasko

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled to visit Osaka, Japan, in mid-July 2025 to attend the World Expo 2025. The Expo, themed "Designing Future Society for Our Lives," runs from April 13 to October 13, 2025, with the U.S. National Day celebration planned for July 19, 2025.

This visit follows President Donald Trump's announcement of a tariff increase on Japanese imports to 25%, effective August 1, 2025. This escalation in trade tensions is a key point of contention between the two nations.

Bessent's trip is his first since trade negotiations began in April 2025. While in Japan, Bessent will be leading the American delegation to the Expo. No formal bilateral trade discussions are planned. The situation regarding trade tensions remains dynamic, with ongoing consultations between U.S. and Japanese officials.
