G7 Summit Addresses Iran-Israel Conflict Amidst Diverging Views

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

On June 16-17, 2025, leaders from the Group of Seven (G7) nations convened in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada. A primary focus of the summit was the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel.

United States President Donald Trump departed the meeting early to manage the US response to the conflict. The G7 leaders reaffirmed Israel's right to self-defense and expressed their support for its security. They also highlighted Iran's role as a major source of instability and terrorism in the Middle East.

Professor Teuku Rezasyah noted the difficulties in achieving consensus among the G7 nations regarding the conflict. He pointed out the diminishing reliance on the United States and the differing views on supporting Israel and approaching Iran as obstacles to reaching a unified agreement.

Disagreements among the G7 leaders were also discussed during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The Kremlin observed the lack of unity within the G7 and considered the unsuccessful visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who failed to secure additional support from the US.

Diplomatic efforts are underway to de-escalate tensions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is scheduled to meet with diplomats from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom in Geneva to seek a peaceful resolution. These talks mark the first direct interaction between Western officials and Iran since the conflict began a week ago.
