Eco-friendly algae packaging replaces disposable plastic

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Notpla, a British company specializing in sustainable packaging made from seaweed, has seen significant growth since its founding in 2014. The company won the Earthshot Prize in 2022 for its efforts to reduce single-use plastics.

Notpla has replaced over 21 million single-use plastic items in Europe and aims to replace 1 billion by 2030. Their products are used in major stadiums and venues across the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands.

In 2025, IKEA introduced Notpla packaging in its new London restaurant. Notpla is also developing new products, including cups for hot and cold drinks. The company is working to provide sustainable solutions to reduce plastic pollution. They make takeout boxes as compostable as fruit peels.
