In a strategic move, Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney signed a security and defense partnership with the European Union. This aims to reduce Canada's reliance on the United States and strengthen defense and security collaboration.
The partnership will allow Canada to participate in the EU's new defense spending programs, including the "ReArm Europe" initiative. The agreement follows threats from former US President Donald Trump to annex Canada.
Canada will now work with Brussels on a bilateral agreement related to the EU's Security Action for Europe (SAFE) plan, valued at 150 billion euros. The EU and Canada will explore ways to cooperate on military assistance to Ukraine and improve interoperability.
