Brazil's Healthcare Sector Sees Significant Investments and Strategic Shifts

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Brazil's healthcare sector is undergoing substantial transformations, marked by significant investments and strategic realignments aimed at enhancing service delivery and infrastructure.

In April 2025, Novo Nordisk, a leading pharmaceutical company, announced a R$6.4 billion investment to expand its manufacturing facility in Minas Gerais. This expansion is set to increase the production capacity of injectable medications for chronic diseases, including diabetes and obesity treatments. The new facility, covering 74,000 square meters, is expected to commence operations by 2028, reinforcing Brazil's role as a key market for Novo Nordisk.

In June 2025, UnitedHealth Group, a major U.S. health insurer, explored divesting its Latin American operations, including the Banmedica subsidiary in Colombia and Chile. This move aligns with the company's strategic focus on the U.S. market, following its exit from Brazil in 2023 and Peru in early 2025. The divestiture reflects a broader trend of international companies reassessing their positions in the Latin American healthcare market.

On the domestic front, Rede D'Or, Brazil's leading hospital group, unveiled plans to invest R$7.5 billion by 2028 to expand its healthcare capacity. The initiative aims to add 5,400 new hospital beds, increasing the company's capacity by 46%. This expansion underscores Rede D'Or's commitment to meeting the growing demand for healthcare services across the country.

Additionally, CVC Capital Partners, a global private equity firm, acquired a 98.5% stake in Brazilian healthcare services provider GSH for R$1.58 billion. This acquisition marks CVC's first healthcare investment in Latin America and highlights the growing interest in Brazil's consolidating medical sector. GSH operates Brazil's largest hemotherapy network, serving 31,000 hospital beds across 270 facilities.

These developments reflect a dynamic and evolving healthcare landscape in Brazil, characterized by significant investments, strategic realignments, and a concerted effort to enhance the quality and accessibility of healthcare services nationwide.
