US Expresses Concern Over Chinese Nationals Fighting for Russia in Ukraine; Reports of Dual-Use Technology Supply

The U.S. State Department has voiced concerns regarding reports of Chinese citizens captured while fighting for Russia in Ukraine. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian intelligence indicates that at least 155 Chinese nationals are fighting for the Russian military, with the actual number likely higher. Zelenskyy stated that Russia is allegedly recruiting Chinese citizens via social media, and Chinese officials are purportedly aware of these efforts. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce described the capture of Chinese nationals as "disturbing," noting China's support for Russia. She stated that China provides nearly 80% of the dual-use items Russia needs to sustain the war. China's alleged provision of dual-use technology to Russia has raised concerns in the U.S. and among its allies. These technologies, which have both civilian and military applications, are reportedly helping Russia to sustain its military operations in Ukraine. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that the suggestion that many Chinese citizens were fighting in Ukraine was “absolutely groundless”. He added that the Chinese government has always asked its citizens to stay away from areas of armed conflict and avoid involvement in armed conflicts in any form.
