On April 7, Donald Trump threatened to impose additional tariffs on imports from China if Beijing does not withdraw its retaliation plans. Trump stated that if China does not withdraw its 34 percent increase above their already long term trading abuses by April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose additional tariffs on China of 50 percent, effective April 9th. China's response included export controls on rare earth elements, and plans for its own 34 percent tariff on US goods, stacking atop existing Chinese levies set to begin April 10. Trump also stated that all talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated, and negotiations with other countries will begin immediately.
