EU and India Aim to Strengthen Strategic Partnership by 2025

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and her team visited India on February 27-28 to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other key officials. The goal was to strengthen the strategic partnership between the EU and India.

Von der Leyen emphasized that the current global competition presents an opportunity for the EU and India to revitalize their cooperation in areas such as trade, technology, security, defense, connectivity, and global cooperation.

Both sides expressed a desire to finalize a free trade agreement by 2025 and collaborate on semiconductors, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and 6G technology. The EU is also planning to invest in energy transfer projects in India through the Global Gateway initiative.

The India-Middle East-Europe corridor, launched during India's G20 presidency, was highlighted as a significant project to revitalize, potentially creating a modern "Silk Road" connecting India, the Arabian Gulf, and Europe.
