European leaders convened on Sunday to address the crisis in Ukraine, advocating for unity around a new peace plan. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, presenting the summit's conclusions, stressed the urgency for action and a unified approach towards a just and lasting peace. Starmer emphasized that any viable ceasefire proposal for Ukraine would require security guarantees from the United States.
He highlighted ongoing collaboration with the U.S., following discussions with President Trump the previous week, underscoring a shared commitment to achieving a durable peace. The summit in London also addressed increasing defense spending to bolster European security. The UK recently announced an increase to 2.5% of its GDP by 2027.
Leaders from Ukraine, France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Canada, Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic, and Romania participated, along with the Turkish Foreign Minister. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Antonio Costa, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte were also present.
