WFP Halves Food Rations in Kakuma Refugee Camp

Kakuma, Kenya - The U.N. World Food Program (WFP) has halved food rations for over 300,000 refugees in the Kakuma camp due to acute funding shortages.

Financing was significantly reduced after the Donald Trump administration paused support in March 2025 as part of a large-scale rollback of U.S. foreign aid, one of the WFP's largest donors.

Refugees now receive 3 kilograms of rice, 1 kilogram of lentils, and 500 milliliters of cooking oil per month, far below recommended nutritional levels, impacting children and pregnant women.

The cuts have resulted in increased malnutrition among children and mothers, with the International Rescue Committee's hospital reporting a rise in severe cases and deaths.

WFP continues to actively seek additional funding, warning that without new donations, only the most vulnerable refugees will be able to receive aid by August, which will significantly exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the camp.
