UK and EU Reach Agreement on Gibraltar's Status

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

The United Kingdom and the European Union reached an agreement on Wednesday regarding the status of Gibraltar.

The agreement aims to facilitate border crossings and resolve years of political uncertainty. The status of Gibraltar, a British overseas territory, and border control with Spain have been contentious issues since the UK voted to leave the EU in 2016.

Under the agreement, travelers arriving at Gibraltar's airport will show their passports to both Gibraltarian and Spanish border officials. This mirrors a system used by French police at London's St. Pancras station.

The UK's Foreign Office stated that the agreement provides a practical solution to avoid "burdensome checks" and long waits at the border. The agreement protects British sovereignty and supports Gibraltar's economy, allowing businesses to plan long-term.

The agreement addresses the role of Spanish officials in checking entry into the Schengen area at Gibraltar's airport and ports. This agreement is expected to bring legal certainty to Gibraltar's residents, businesses, and the region.
