Breaking: Spain's Somport Tunnel Railway Project Advances, Boosting International Connectivity

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

In a significant development for international infrastructure, the Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has awarded a contract for the construction project of the Somport railway tunnel. This project aims to revive the railway connection between Spain and France through the Huesca province. According to recent reports, the estimated investment for the tunnel's conditioning is approximately 93 million euros, with co-financing from the EU's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). The Somport tunnel, a key element in the Zaragoza-Canfranc-Pau line, has been closed since 1970, and its reopening is seen as crucial for cross-border transit of passengers and goods. The Spanish infrastructure manager ADIF is taking responsibility for the reconstruction of the tunnel. The project is divided into two phases, with the first phase focusing on the drafting of the construction project, and the second phase involving additional reports and actions. This initiative is part of a broader plan to restore the Zaragoza-Canfranc-Pau line for international traffic, enhancing connections with Europe and advancing freight transport by rail. This project is a step towards improving the connection between Spain and France.
